The streets are burning for retribution. They need reminders - suggestions that the fiery passions of their souls are still shared by a sleeping majority. The dark horses of the world still cling to their headphones, walking the streets and bellowing the melodies of unforgotten champions; melodies not much different than those of New Jersey's Ascending From Ashes. By combining Morello-esque riffing with the anthemic tendencies of Imagine Dragons, AFA achieve the aggressive essence of the suburban underdog, ascending to the pinnacle of defiance.
The band was born in the garages of Bergen County, from which they emerged on the VFW scene as “Make It Fit", with a self-released EP titled A War Unarmed, produced by Matt Mesiano of Cannon Found Soundations. In the wake of a positive local reception, the band dissected itself, changed its line-up, and linked up with New York based manager, producer, and label owner Nick Vlachos, returning as Ascending From Ashes. The Phoenix EP, engineered by Joel Buikema, would be AFA's first record, toting tracks like the hard-rock epic "Asphyxiation", and it would take them all the way to Bamboozle in 2011.
Performing rigourously over the next year and a half for crowds of infinitely varying sizes, AFA honed their craft. Opening slots for bands like Taproot, Evans Blue, and hed p.e. became the stepping stones on the suburban underdogs' ascent to their next big venture: 2013's Phoenix Rising. "The attitude was more concise this time around", says lead guitarist David Ricco. "We'd been sharpened by the east coast's lukewarm reception to metal; we were determined to show them, and the rest of the world, what it's capable of", adds brother, founding member, and rhythm guitarist Kevin Ricco. It was seen fit to return to Cannon Found Soundations, this time working with owner and producer Jesse Cannon (Limp Bizkit, Dillinger Escape Plan) and engineer Mike Oettinger.
The result is an eight-track blitzkrieg of serene melody and agressive tone. With calls to action like "Swing" and "Thundergun", the piano driven balladry of "Nothing Left to Say", and the ambitious revival of the original 1990's Power Rangers theme song, Phoenix Rising leaves little room for passion and imagination to go untouched. "Many metal bands only try to impress you with technical precision and power. AFA not only does that, but they also bring melody and pop sensibilities to their songs,” adds producer Jesse Cannon.
